Seeking and Finding the Right Fit: Jesse’s Journey with MWSW
After earning his high school diploma in 2024, Jesse knew he wanted to build a successful future for himself. He had a strong interest in pursuing a career in skilled trades, but like many young adults entering the workforce for the first time, he wasn’t sure where to begin.
When Jesse enrolled in the Michigan Works! Southwest Young Professionals Plus Program in October 2025, he faced several challenges that were preventing him from moving forward with confidence. He had little work experience, lacked a current resume, and felt unprepared for job interviews. Completing online applications often felt overwhelming, and without a reliable system for tracking his job search efforts, opportunities sometimes slipped through the cracks. Most importantly, while he knew he wanted a career in the trades, he had not yet discovered which path best matched his skills, interests, and long-term goals.
Rather than becoming discouraged by those uncertainties, Jesse chose to seek support and invest in his future. Through the Young Professionals Plus program, Jesse began developing the tools and skills needed to become a more competitive candidate. He worked on strengthening his resume, improving his interviewing abilities, and learning strategies for navigating the modern job search process. As his confidence grew, so did his understanding of what employers were looking for and how he could present himself professionally.
At the same time, Jesse focused on exploring potential career pathways. His interest in the skilled trades remained strong, but he recognized the importance of finding a career that would be a good fit for his abilities and interests. Through career exploration activities and discussions about education and training opportunities, he gained a clearer understanding of the options available to him and the steps required to reach his goals.
One of the most important lessons Jesse learned during his journey was that finding the right career path is often a process rather than a single decision. Instead of rushing into a career simply because it seemed like the next logical step, he took the time to learn more about himself, explore opportunities, and identify what truly interested him.
Jesse’s commitment to growth and exploration ultimately led to employment with AutoZone, where he secured a position earning $13.06 per hour. The opportunity provided him with valuable workplace experience while allowing him to continue developing the professional skills that will support him throughout his career. Through his role, Jesse has been able to strengthen his communication, customer service, and problem-solving abilities while gaining confidence in his ability to succeed in a workplace environment.
As he continues exploring his long-term career options, Jesse is better prepared than ever to make informed decisions about his future. Support from key partners, including Kellogg Community College, has helped him gain exposure to opportunities that can assist him in reaching his goals and identifying the training pathways that best align with his interests.
Today, Jesse has a stronger sense of direction and a greater belief in his own abilities. What once felt like uncertainty has been replaced with a growing confidence that he can build a successful future through persistence, exploration, and continued learning. His journey demonstrates that sometimes the most important step in achieving a goal is taking the time to discover the path that is right for you.
