Reaching for a Bigger Future: Victor’s Journey with MWSW
When Victor enrolled in the Michigan Works! Southwest Young Professionals Plus Program in October 2025, he was focused on finding a part-time job while finishing high school. Like many students preparing for life after graduation, he wanted to earn money, gain work experience, and begin building a future for himself. However, several obstacles made those goals feel difficult to reach.
At the time, Victor did not have a resume and struggled with applying for local jobs. He also knew that transportation would become a challenge if he secured employment, making the goal of earning his driver’s license increasingly important. Beyond his immediate employment needs, Victor had ambitious dreams for the future. He was interested in pursuing a career in either law or finance, but he wasn’t sure how to explore those fields or what steps would be required to achieve those goals. Like many young people, he also had questions about college, financial aid, and whether higher education was truly within reach.
Despite those uncertainties, Victor was determined to create opportunities for himself. As he worked with his Career Coach, Chelsie Taylor, he began taking meaningful steps toward both his short-term and long-term goals. He focused on strengthening his employment readiness skills while continuing to stay on track academically. Over time, he successfully secured and maintained part-time employment, gaining valuable experience and demonstrating the responsibility needed to balance work and school commitments.
At the same time, Victor tackled one of the barriers that had previously limited his independence. Through consistent practice and preparation, he worked toward earning his driver’s license. What once felt like an obstacle gradually became an achievable goal. Victor passed his road test, obtained his driver’s license, and even bought his own car with the money he has saved since his very first paycheck. Having his license will provide greater freedom and flexibility as he continues pursuing employment and educational opportunities.
As Victor’s confidence grew, so did his outlook on the future. He began exploring college options, researching career pathways, and learning more about the opportunities available to him after high school. He applied for the YOU Scholarship and continued working closely with his Career Coach to better understand how his interests in law and finance could translate into meaningful careers. Plans were made for him to tour college campuses and participate in job shadowing experiences within the legal field, providing firsthand exposure to professions that had once felt distant and difficult to imagine.
Perhaps the most significant change was not in Victor’s resume or career plans, but in the way he viewed himself and his future. Reflecting on his experience, Victor shared, “Career coaching has helped me want to pursue college more than I did before. Career coaching made me realize I can get the degrees that I want and it gave me more hope. Before career coaching, I thought I screwed up my future because I didn’t take high school seriously enough. I gave up on the thought of college. Now I know that it’s possible.”
His words capture a transformation that goes far beyond employment or education. Where there was once doubt, there is now confidence. Where there was uncertainty, there is now a plan. Most importantly, where there was once a belief that certain opportunities were out of reach, there is now a renewed sense of hope and possibility.
Today, Victor remains on track to graduate high school and continues building momentum toward his future goals. Whether his path ultimately leads to a courtroom, a financial firm, or another opportunity yet to be discovered, Victor’s story is a powerful reminder that sometimes the most important outcome of career development is not simply finding a job or choosing a college. It is helping a young person believe in their own potential and giving them the confidence to pursue a future that once seemed impossible.
