Optimism and Determination Deliver a Bright Future: David’s Journey with MWSW
When David enrolled in the Michigan Works! Southwest Young Professionals (YP) Program in March 2025, he was looking for guidance on employment and his future education plans. While David had always been eager to learn and willing to challenge himself, he often needed additional time and support to master new skills. Despite facing obstacles throughout his life, he approached every opportunity with optimism, determination, and a genuine desire to grow.
Even before joining the program, David had demonstrated a commitment to building his future. He took advantage of educational opportunities available through his school system, including career training through the Branch Area Careers Center while still in high school. However, he was uncertain about his post-secondary education options and needed support finding employment that aligned with his long-term career goals.
When he entered the Young Professionals program, David struggled with completing tasks independently and maintaining consistency in both his academic and personal responsibilities. Recognizing his potential, his Career Coach, Australia Smith, worked closely with him to build the skills and confidence needed to succeed both in the workplace and beyond.
Through the Young Professionals program, David participated in career-readiness activities, completed virtual and in-person mock interviews, and gained valuable work experience through the MyCITY Internship Program. He was placed as an intern with the Coach Eby Youth and Family Center in Coldwater, where he had the opportunity to strengthen his workplace skills in a supportive environment.
As David gained experience, he and his Career Coach worked together to update and refine his resume, prepare for job opportunities, and develop strategies for managing workplace expectations and responsibilities. They also explored employment options that aligned with his interests and long-term goals. With support navigating online job applications and the hiring process, David secured a position as a Zoo Attendant at Binder Park Zoo. What began as a seasonal, part-time opportunity quickly became much more.
David embraced the role with enthusiasm and a strong work ethic. He consistently demonstrated reliability, volunteered to help when additional coverage was needed, and often picked up extra shifts to support his team. His dedication did not go unnoticed. Over time, he increased his hours to more than 32 hours per week and earned a reputation as a valued employee who could be counted on to get the job done.
At the same time, David was making significant strides in other areas of his life. Earlier in the school year, there were concerns that he might need summer school to complete graduation requirements. Rather than allowing those challenges to discourage him, David remained focused on his goals. Through hard work and perseverance, he successfully passed all his classes and graduated from high school on time in the spring of 2025.
The growth David demonstrated throughout the year extended far beyond academics and employment. He became increasingly independent, learning to attend interviews on his own, advocate for himself, and manage responsibilities without constant supervision. The confidence he developed through these experiences opened doors to new opportunities and helped him see what he could achieve.
David valued the support he received through Michigan Works! Southwest so much that he chose to share his experience with Michigan Works! Southwest’s Workforce Development Board, speaking about the impact the program had on his journey.
Perhaps one of the most meaningful measures of David’s success came from those closest to him. His mother shared that she now sees him as dependable and resourceful, qualities she had not expected him to develop so quickly. She expressed both pride and surprise at the transformation she witnessed as David gained confidence and independence.
Today, David continues to build on that success as a full-time student at Michigan Career & Technical Institute (MCTI). Living independently in the dormitories, he is enrolled in the Retail Management training program and continues to develop the skills that will support his future career goals.
Looking back on his journey, David has learned that growth takes time, effort, and persistence. He understands the value of accountability, self-advocacy, and stepping outside of his comfort zone. His story demonstrates that when determination is paired with the right support system, young people can overcome challenges, exceed expectations, and create bright futures for themselves.
