Makaylah’s Path to Success: Gaining Career Experience Before Graduation

In just seven months with Michigan Works! Southwest’s Youth Services program, youth participant Makaylah has built an impressive foundation for a career in banking and accounting. Through Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funding and Young Professionals (YP) funding, she completed multiple career training sessions, developed key professional skills, and secured internships with Century Bank and Trust and G&W Display, Inc.

Makaylah recently shared, “I like getting paid and learning how to be a good employee.” In the same moment, she exclaimed, “I am excited to start working my next job!” as she prepares to begin her second internship experience this week.

Through perseverance—including overcoming a knee injury—she has gained real-world experience, strengthened her interview skills, and built a competitive resume before even starting her senior year. With the support of the Michigan Works! Southwest Youth Career Coaching Team, Makaylah is well on her way to achieving her long-term career goals!
