Finding Direction and Building Confidence: Natalia’s Journey with Michigan Works! Southwest

When Natalia Diaz-Andrade enrolled in the Michigan Works! Southwest Young Professionals (YP) program in March 2025, she was a student at Lakeview High School with big questions about her future. Living in a low-income household with limited exposure to career opportunities, Natalia was eager to gain work experience but unsure where to begin.

With guidance from her Career Coach, Mya Schulz, Natalia began turning uncertainty into action. Through one-on-one coaching and career exploration, Natalia gained valuable insight into the world of work. She participated in industry and education tours, including visits to Karma House Wellness and Community Center and Ciao Bella Chocolate, where she explored a variety of career paths and workplace environments. These experiences helped her better understand her interests and begin shaping her future goals.

Natalia also worked closely with her coach to strengthen her resume and build her interview skills. Determined to expand her opportunities, she earned her CPR certification, an achievement that would soon open doors.

In the summer of 2025, Natalia participated in the MyCITY Summer Paid Internship Program, where she spent seven weeks working at Kellogg Arena. This hands-on experience gave her the confidence and foundational skills she needed to pursue employment. That preparation paid off.

Natalia secured a position as a lifeguard at Cereal City Swim Club, a role that aligned perfectly with her interests. Through hard work and dedication, she quickly proved herself, earning increased responsibilities and the opportunity to teach swimming lessons as a Youth Swim Instructor. Today, she works directly with children, something she finds both meaningful and rewarding.

Not one to slow down, Natalia re-enrolled in the MyCITY Paid Internship Program in February 2026 while continuing her part-time role at the swim club. Balancing both opportunities demonstrates her commitment to growth and her willingness to take on new challenges.

Reflecting on her journey, Natalia shared, “Before this program, I didn’t know what career I wanted or how to even get a job. My coach helped me every step of the way; from building a resume to getting certified and finding a summer job I love. I feel more prepared for the future now.”

Today, Natalia’s resume highlights real-world experience, industry exposure, and valuable certifications, making her more competitive for future opportunities. More importantly, she has gained confidence, direction, and a strong foundation for long-term success.

Natalia’s story is a powerful example of how access to guidance, hands-on experience, and supportive coaching can help young people discover their potential and build a brighter future.
