Building Talent Through Registered Apprenticeships

Michigan Works! Southwest recently welcomed local employers and workforce development leaders to its Calhoun County Service Center in Battle Creek for a Race to Talent™ event focused on the benefits and opportunities of Registered Apprenticeship programs.

The event gave employers an opportunity to learn how Registered Apprenticeships can help businesses develop skilled talent, strengthen their workforce and create career pathways for employees. Participants also learned about resources and support available to businesses interested in launching a new apprenticeship program or participating in an existing program.

Local Employers Share Their Apprenticeship Experiences

A key part of the event was hearing directly from Southwest Michigan employers that have implemented Registered Apprenticeship programs. Representatives from SJS VDC Inc. and Geislinger Corporation shared their experiences and highlighted how apprenticeships can support both employer and employee success.

Registered Apprenticeships combine paid, hands-on work experience with related instruction, allowing employees to develop skills while building a career. For employers, apprenticeship programs can provide a structured way to develop talent with the specific skills their business needs.

New Apprenticeship Wall Unveiled

The event also marked the unveiling of Michigan Works! Southwest’s new Apprenticeship Wall, created by Conduit to the Trades.

The interactive display is designed to increase awareness of skilled trades careers and help job seekers explore career pathways in the trades. The Apprenticeship Wall provides another resource for introducing individuals to the wide range of opportunities available through skilled trades and Registered Apprenticeships.

Connecting Employers to Resources

Workforce development leaders from Michigan Works! Southwest and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) also participated in the event, sharing information about resources and support available to local employers.

Registered Apprenticeships are available across a wide range of industries, with opportunities spanning more than 1,300 occupations. By participating in an apprenticeship program, employers can develop their workforce while providing employees with valuable skills, hands-on experience and opportunities for career advancement.
